Stoney Point Landfill has 19 groundwater monitoring wells, 14 of which have been polluted above federal advisory levels based on samples collected between August 30, 2010 and September 12, 2013. Groundwater at this site contains unsafe levels of sulfate, boron, manganese, cobalt, arsenic and beryllium.
Site descriptionInterstate Power and Light's Stoney Point Closed Landfill is located 0.25 miles west of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The site was a former limestone rock quarry, later used as a coal combustion residue landfill for ash generated at Prairie Creek Generating Station. The landfill stopped receiving ash in 1987 and was covered in 1992. As of 2011, there were a number of private wells within 1,000 feet and one public water supply well within 2,000 feet downgradient of the landfill. The closed landfill is located near a new housing development constructed between 2004 and 2012.
