H.W. Pirkey Power Plant has 21 groundwater monitoring wells, 18 of which have been polluted above federal advisory levels based on samples collected between May 10, 2016 and August 16, 2019. Groundwater at this site contains unsafe levels of cobalt, lithium, radium, beryllium, mercury, arsenic, sulfate, cadmium, boron, lead, chromium, antimony and fluoride.

Site description

H.W. Pirkey Power Plant is owned by the Southwestern Electric Power Company and is located in Hallsville, Texas. The plant has one coal-fired unit with a capacity of 721-MW, which began operating in 1985 and is scheduled to be retired in 2023. Pirkey has a landfill, Flue Gas Desulfurization Stackout Area, West Bottom Ash Pond, and East Bottom Ash Pond that are all regulated under the federal coal ash rule.
