Clear Springs Ranch has 10 groundwater monitoring wells, 10 of which have been polluted above federal advisory levels based on samples collected between June 22, 2016 and September 24, 2019. Groundwater at this site contains unsafe levels of lithium, sulfate, selenium, thallium, boron, cobalt, arsenic, radium and antimony.

Site description

Clear Springs Ranch is owned by Colorado Springs Utilities in Fountain, Colorado in El Paso County and has been operational since the 1970s. It is an existing and active landfill regulated under the federal coal ash rule containing coal ash and other waste from the Martin Drake Power Plant, which stopped burning coal all together in 2021. There are no drinking water wells located where the landfill is located.
