Snapshot

R.D. Morrow, Sr. Generating Station has 12 groundwater monitoring wells, 12 of which have been polluted above federal advisory levels based on samples collected between October 29, 2015 and October 17, 2019. Groundwater at this site contains unsafe levels of lithium, cobalt, sulfate, boron, arsenic, beryllium, molybdenum, thallium, lead, radium, chromium and mercury.

Site description

R.D. Morrow, Sr. Generating Station is operated by Cooperative Energy and owned by the South Mississippi Electric Power Association near Purvis, Mississippi in Lamar County. Morrow is located near Black Creek. Plant Morrow operated two coal-fired units with a capacity of 400-MW until its coal operations were retired in 2018. The company is in the process of converting the plant into a 550-MW natural gas-powered facility, operational in 2023. The disposal units at this facility include one 72-acre CCR landfill and two smaller, unlined CCR surface impoundments (two acres total). As of June 2018, Cooperative Energy has decommissioned all coal-fired units and has begun construction on a new, combined cycle natural gas unit. Plant Morrow’s Landfill and two surface impoundments are regulated under the CCR rule.
