Thomas Hill Energy Center has 6 groundwater monitoring wells, 4 of which have been polluted above federal advisory levels based on samples collected between August 21, 2016 and August 26, 2019. Groundwater at this site contains unsafe levels of sulfate, lithium, cobalt and arsenic.
Site descriptionAssociated Energy Cooperative’s Thomas Hill Energy Center is in Clifton Hill, Missouri adjacent to the 1.5-billion-gallon Thomas Hill Reservoir in Randolph County. Thomas Hill has been in operation since 1966 and currently operates three coal-fired units that generate a combined capacity of 1,153-MW. Thomas Hill Energy Center is one of the few plants in the country that burns “clean coal,” a refined form of coal known for releasing more NOx emissions than coal’s unrefined form. Thomas Hill operates an onsite Ash Pond System that is regulated under the CCR rule.
